Stag Night Of The Dead – Review

Stag Night of the Dead is the first feature from Zomball Films, a name taken from the game played by the characters in SNOTD, yet almost everybody involved in producing their debut movie has a wealth of experience and roles under their belt, helping this film mostly come out ahead of the game.

Sebastian Street and Sophie Lovell Anderson are the leads in this ensemble piece, with Street playing the eponymous stag and Anderson the ‘fifty quid stripper’, whose airbrush enhanced boobs grace the poster (which isn’t to say they’re not naturally ample), hired to give him his final send-off before his wedding the next day.

Set months after a bird flu epidemic sweeps the country (turning people into zombies), those infected have now been rounded up and are being experimented upon by Mr. Ree (Jeff Rudom) in his secure compound but as funds get lower and zombies die he’s forced to create more for his experiments and provides the ‘Zomball’ experience to raise capital.

Zomball is an alternative to the boring and normal stag do activities, like paintball. Players are given the opportunity to shoot zombies with stun guns and to fight their way to the recharge stations before they become overwhelmed. Not the best idea 24 hours before someone’s due to get married (or anytime really). Obviously not everything goes to plan and soon it looks like any of them will be lucky to get out alive, let alone make the wedding.

snotd06 Stag Night Of The Dead ReviewStag Night of the Dead is a very obviously British film, from the dialogue to the  way it’s shot and if you’ve ever seen a Brit-flick you’ll know already if that’s a good or bad thing. The characters are more chav than Chev* though, with DJ Ronny (Joe Rainbow) a ridiculously over the top Ali G clone and best man Marky (Bruce Lawrence) your typical ‘sleep with anything’ lad.

The comedy in this zom-com is also quintessentially British, more restrained guffaws than recent Hollywood driven Apatow films. This isn’t a bad thing as the story would survive without it and there’s still the odd exposed zombie testicle to laugh about (the zombie in question actually had them hanging out of his pocket during the screening).

The film hangs together well with some good direction and thought put into the shots. At no point did I feel like I was watching somebody cutting their teeth making a movie and despite the slightly proton pack-esque shots the stun guns fired (I’d like to see the science behind that!) the effects and make-up held up well.

There’s less gore in SNOTD than most zombie movies, probably because the protagonists main weapons are non-lethal and it ultimately seemed like a good idea as chunks of flesh filling the screen would have taken away much of what makes this film enjoyable, the feeling that you and your mates are fighting zombies.

Overall Stag Night of the Dead is the sort of movie  which will keep drunk students amused for repeat viewings and make a more than passable nights entertainment for anybody who enjoys zombie movies. Without any firm cinema release organised yet this film may soon become one to have in your DVD collection.

*I know Crank isn’t a British film but it’s the only Statham character I could make a pun on, alright.
